If I'm replacing the master cylinder, do I / should I bench bleed it? _________________ 1969 Beetle

I've never bench bled a VW master cylinder and I always stop. _________________ 73 Typ481

Replace the master and fill the reservoir.. Crack open the rear bleeders and walk away. After about 10 minutes you'll see fluid leaking out of them. Close the bleeders and do the same thing on the front bleeders. Once they have drip bled you have effectively bench bled the master and the entire system.
Start at the rear cylinders and bleed them conventionally, you'll see that you only have to pump them about twice to get clear fluid out of them.
This works and is very simple. _________________ Jake Raby

Thanks for the advise. I bet it would work great....except...I didn't check my bleeder valves before I started this process. One is sheared off (before I bought it) , the other will be shortly if I continue. I think I can replace the calipers but I don't have a way of getting the nut off/on. Any thoughts?
Also, anything else to replace besides the calipers and brakes to replace once I'm in there? _________________ 1969 Beetle

I can drill out your broken bleeder screws if you want. Alot cheaper than buying new Bus calipers. _________________ '69 Bug, 1776, dual kadrons, Web 111 cam

Sorry, I meant wheel cylinders, I'm so used to talking about disc brakes. I've never been into drum brakes. Wonder if it's pretty straight forward. (i just replaced the master cylinder and booster). I'm kinda worried about getting the axle nut off. (Assuming I need to) _________________ 1969 Beetle

If this is for your bus, the big nut doesn't need to come off to remove the drum. _________________ 73 Typ481
