Ok, so I was reassembling the rear drums yesterday, and noticed that one end of the thin metal tab that holds one of the star nut adjusters in place has broken off. I might have broken it myself, but am thinking I would have noticed that when I took it apart.

I went ahead with assembly anyhow, just to see what was what. Without the drums on, everything seems tight enough that it might stay in place with adjusting itself at will. What to do? Will it stay put-ish? Is replacing it as difficult as it looks, i.e., removing entire axle to remove backing place, since plate and adjuster nut tube-like structure are one piece? Any alternate fixes?

Barring advice to the contrary, I'll just go ahead and be a test pilot and let you all know how it turns out. Or JB weld a paper clip to it and blame it on the PO if anyone else sees it. Rolling Eyes

No need to remove the backing plate. Take a punch or small chisel, and tap that flat spring out to the side. Its peened on to the adjuster block. Then just tap the new one in from the side, until its centered. Don't forget to lube the star adjusters & screws! Makes subsequent brake adjustments much easier.
BTW...part number for the flat spring is 211609185A
Clyde may have some.

My suppliers don't have them. I'll keep looking for some though.
