I finally got my Dakota Digital Cylinder head temp gauge installed in my 76 westy 2.0 FI. I took it out for a 30min test drive. I was surprised to see low CHT readings. Granted it's only 81 and overcast but the highest reading I got was 301 on a small hill going 65 on the loop 10. Tried some larger hills on back roads and no change, still less than 300. Ensured the gauge was set to F* , the probe ring is nice and flush on the #3 head. I don't want to jinx myself if I'm just lucky but it just doesn't seem right.

Hmmm, not sure if those readings are accurate. At 300 it's not even warm yet. Where/how did you connect the sender?

I installed the spark plug ring sensor under the plug on cylinder number 3, and wired it (with no cuts) using the harness it came with.

Test it against a temp gun. The gauge may be off.

I have confirmed that my CHT is really that low. I went through the entire wiring harness to ensure there were no shorts and grounds were good. Tested the gauge versus boiling wAter and a digital thermometer which confirmed the gauge wS reading the same as the thermometer.

You gotta drive it harder to get those head temps up. Cool

I wonder if that cylinder is firing correctly. IE getting the full amount of fuel, good spark, etc. How does the plug look?

I'm not trying to rain on your low CHT parade. Smile

Ultimately, That is my real concern as well Greg. Just doesn't seen feasible to be that low without a problem. Its a new Bosch Plug with correct gap. The injector is spraying fuel and probably needs a rebuild but that's a later project. I get good spark at the plug but it does have some carbon buildup versus a nice clean burn, maybe a poorly synched FI system?

Do you have the thermostat and flaps installed? The shroud for FI bugs actually directs more air to the heads and less to the oil coiler because emmisions standards increased cht temperatures.
