As many of you know, last year I bought my Westy and my sister-in-law bought a 70 Ghia at the same time from the same guy. It looked like the Ghia just needed an engine rebuild and it would be ready for the road. As we know, things are seldom as they appear in the VW world. While Shane was rebuilding the engine I discovered the Ghia had fiberglass pans and the seats were bolted to the pans with only 4 small bolts. (yes I should have discovered this BEFORE the purchase )
Fast forward to present day. Old pans are out and new ones are ready to go in. I'll be taking it down to Augusta Joe for installation of the new pans this weekend. I'll take some pics and post them as we work to get this baby on the road. _________________ 73 Typ481

Damn...wish that I could be there to see what a solid Ghia is supposed to look like! |

I took the Ghia to Joe last week and despite it being 200 degrees, Joe, Johnny, and myself managed to get the body off the pans and then let Joe work his magic. Joe put it the pans and salvaged the rusty seat rails. We (he) moved the seat rails back a couple of inches for more leg room as no one will be riding in the rear seat. Here are a few pics.
Ready to go.
Got there, time to remove body.
Joe ready for action!
Damn, He does measure!
Going back together.
While the body was off, I saw many thing to address that will be easier without the body in the way. We did not bolt the body down and I will be taking it off again soon to facilitate some other work. _________________ 73 Typ481

So I've moved the pan inside to work on it. I started on the front beam and was just going to clean and paint it before putting on the new brake hoses.
Well as usually happens with VWs, I found some rust holes. These were in the shock tower, so I pulled the beam and cleaned and painted the frame head while it was exposed.
I took the beam to the car wash and degreased it last night. Now I'll take it to get welded, then I'll finish cleaning and paint it.
While at Bug Jam I got a used shifter for $5.00 (thanks Clyde). I don't have the before picture, but here it is after I finished with it.

It has been quite a while since I updated this thread. The pan is now ready to be reassembled with the new components for the brakes, shifter bushings, and steering coupler. The pans had the rust soda blasted off, then they were primed, seam sealed and painted. Yes, I had already done this....on the top; this was the bottom of the pan's turn. Here are a few photos of the progress.

Wow, looks great! You should bring it to the tech day. I'm sure we can find enough help to throw the body on _________________ 1969 Beetle

Wow, it has been a long time since I last updated this thread; mostly because I haven't done much to the car. With much help from Clyde and Wilson this weekend the front beam is finished. (Shocks, brakes, sway bar, spindles.) Shift rod is back in with new coupler and bushing. Shifter installed. E-brake handle installed and cables adjusted. New heat cables, new accelerator cable, CV boot replaced as well as rear bearings on the driver's side and new brakes in the back too.
I can see the light at the end of reassembly tunnel.

The body has been sent to paint and body. James Henderson at H & H Paint & Body has it now. When it comes back it will be Ruby Red body and Pearl White top.
Once it is done I'll have to figure out how to put it all back together.
Ok, now the rest of you update your projects. _________________ 73 Typ481

Well here it is February and the Ghia still isn't back from the paint shop. (it went to the shop in late June )
I've let the painter know he needs to finish it ASAP! The only worry I have is that if I push him too much he'll do a crap job just to be done. _________________ 73 Typ481

Well, 11 months late, the Ghia is finally painted and back at my house.
It looks good. (yes, I'll post pictures soon)
I'll try to use this thread to stay motivated to finish assembly in a reasonable amount of time. _________________ 73 Typ481

So much for that motivation! It is a year later and the body has just gone back onto the pan. Thanks Bob, Joe, Johnny, Steve, Kris, Little Jon, and Mary!
Here are a couple of pictures from Saturday's adventure. Dang Ghias are HEAVY!!!

Just wanted to say that after a while away from the club site, how refreshing it was to see the hard work of a man I truly respect for his love of VW's.
My hat is off to you Jon Hobus....NICE FRICKEN JOB!!
