i cant press the clutch for more than a few seconds before the bug begins to die. this kinda sucks. i tried checking the vacuum lines and they are all good. havent got a clue what to do.

okay so i got the idle problem fixed for the most part. she was in dire need of new plugs and the timing was advanced a snidget too much. i also adjusted the idle a bit and its almost as good as new. in the process i found out i have a fuel leak around the carburetor. i might as well rebuild it or replace it with bigger and better. any suggestions?

Find out what is leaking. It may need to be re-bushed. If not, I would stay stock and rebuild the one you have.

well, clyde worked all afternoon (id like to say i helped but all i did was stand around trying to watch him do his thing). a job that could have taken a few hours took 4.5. he rebuilt the carb, the gaskets were BAD off. it was a horrible sight. then we thought id have to buy a new carb b/c my carb has a micro machine of a main jet inside and we couldnt get it to thread back in - but it was just an instance of mistaken identity. we were trying to screw in the wrong jet. got the carb back together and on and noticed the carb was really unstable. turns out the PO tightened the carb so much that it warped the intake and the carb. so we had to grind on it for a while. got it together, cranked her up and she started to whistle at us. intake leak. took it apart and ground some more, and some more, and some more. finally got it on and all was good. took the car around the block and it was sputtering. crap. checked everything again. turns out the points are fried. and clyde wont have any until monday, if he gets the kind i need. looks like im headed to enterprise tomorrow.

If Clyde doesn't get the right set of points in, let me know what the part number is. I have several sets new in the box.

And we didn't grind, we filed. Much more precise Smile
The main and idle jets had like m3 and m4 threads. smallest i've ever seen. Threw me off guard. I had an english muffin for dinner once I mellowed out, about 11pm.

It's a 34 pict aftermarket Brosol job. The points needed are the ones that fit 65-68 standard bugs. They have the hole at the pivot, that fits on a shaft on the plate in the dist (two piece points).

i called pep boys and they can order it. it will take 3 days to get the part. and id wish i could get the part numbers but my front decklid has decided it likes being closed permanently. i cant open it, my tools are in there so i cant pull the points out to fund the part numbers. this is really embarrassing.

Tito, remove the second fender bolt on the drivers side and have someone shine a light through it (a simple rig with a AA and a clear LCD works well. Remove the second and third fender bolt from the passengers side and fish a small wire 3ft long with a small hook on the end in the third hole, back up and squint looking through the second hole and you should be able to pop the lock. I did it within an hour. If you need help, let me know, I will be in Athens tomorrow mid morning.

I found a used set of points that will get you going. They are in good shape and I cleaned them up. I have several sets of new points, but they were all for newer models.
