Hey everbody.......I was hoping to make it to the Poker Run to meet everbody, but, alas, the Treehive's alternator decided to die on me......I figured that asking the question "Hey, can I get a jump" everytime we stopped would get annoying......anyway, against better judgement, I have decided to replace the alternator myself.....bus depot carries these:

http://www.busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=021903023EX

And the 70 amp is a lot more expensive and not listed for my year Westy (1974), but I have read that a 70 amp would work. My bus does is not utilizing a dual battery setup, but I intend on eventually setting up the second battery and rewiring the radio and interior lights to run off that battery. My question is : Is a 55 amp alternator good enough for the dual battery setup? Or should I drop the extra dough on the 70 amp, given the wiring mods that I am intending?

Any thoughts and tips on the alternator replacement will be greatly appreciated. Normally I would just pay a mechanic, but I feel like it's time for me to roll up my sleeves and commune with my bus a bit.

Thanks,

Ted

There is quite a difference in price. Shocked BUT if you go to the higher amps you will have a better system. This will really pay off as you run more things to make camping more enjoyable. There will also be more power for lights, radio, ignition, etc. Go for MORE POWER if you got the bucks.

Sounds like a candidate for "Tech Day". I'd like to see it done.

Jon, is this something Clyde can get? or Clyde, is this something you can get?

I normally channel through Jon.

The price difference is simply crazy. Plus the $90 core charge! I'd go stock with the additional battery, and carry jumper cables.

Study up on the wiring diagram. One good mistake can fry stuff. (never grab wires that are smoking- that molten plastic will burn into your fingers fast- and the hot wire inside is even worse!)

Tip: disconnect battery first.

I can get the stock alt., but it would be $90.00, and the core is $38.00 through my supplier.
