I wanted to pass along my thanks to Clyde for the advice on how to go about replacing the shifter rod bushing in my 66. You were right and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The shifter is now firm and smooth with no rattles! What a difference.

The only labor intensive part was scotch-briting the rod so it would slide easily through the bushing. Lots of surface rust to clean up. I also filed down the previous pliers marks from when it was done before. I wanted no rough edges to catch and tear up the new bushing.

If anyone is planning to tackle this, my helpful tip is to use a U-shaped coat hangar loop to lift and support the rod end at the shifter opening during installation. This allows you to set it at the right height to go into the bushing. I did this project as a one-man operation so this allowed me to push the tube in from the front while the coat hanger support the rod end at the right height. It worked great. I also used a broom stick to push the rod from the front as much as possible to reduce my use of pliers through the shifter opening.

The funny thing is that my shifter rod was bent slightly in three places. How that happened, I don't know. A dead blow hammer and some blocks of wood fixed that problem.

Now that I see how easy this all was, I'm going to make it a maintenance item to re-grease the bushing every year or two.

Cheers,

Pete
