The drain plug is on the bottom, the fill plug is on the side. Drivers side I believe. They are 17mm allen. I use a 17mm bolt on a pair of visegrips. Most people don't have a 17mm alen wrench laying around so you can be creative. If you buy 90w in bottles it comes with a nozzle on it . Just stick it in the hole and sqeeze. Fill until it runs out the hole. Should take around two and a half to three qts.I wouldn't use synthetic, I hear its to slippery and will cause some grinding between shifts because the syncros can't get a grip. Hope this helps. _________________ Shane Price

Oh yeah, I'd make sure you can get the fill plug out before you drain it! _________________ Shane Price

Scott, I've got a 17mm allen wrench socket if you want to borrow it.
I disagree about the synthetic gear oil. I'm changing all my VWs to synthetic. Do a search at www.thesamba.com to decide for your self. _________________ 73 Typ481

Here is a good thread for changing trans fluid. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=264685&highlight=
Redline MT-90 is what I'm using. Your shop probably sells it. Many motorcycles use it from what I've read. _________________ 73 Typ481

You could be right about the synthetic Jon. I got this info from a 40+ year vw mechanic. He was fixin em straight of the boat in the 60's. I took his word and didn't try it myself. If it works for yall I'll change over. I have proved him wrong before. Just the same he does know a whole lot of tricks. It comes in handy knowing him. Me being an asian import specialist , all his kids drive Honda's and toyota's. So we're always helpin each other. He also has a nice collection of good used parts for bugs. It's saved me a ton of money. _________________ Shane Price

Maybe Jake will give us his thoughts on this. (it is hard to get Jake to give his opinion. )
If you read all the stuff on the Samba you can get really confused.
I read all I could stand and decided to go with the Redline. I'm putting it in the bus, so once it's on the road I'll tell you how it does. _________________ 73 Typ481

Yeah , I'm curious to know. I can get all kinds of redline products through a supplier of ours, but i've never used it. I have castrol gl-5 in it now which is what you run in most diffs. or any trans that calls for 90w gear oil or dope as its known. _________________ Shane Price

Serprice is right about making sure you can get the fill plug off before the drain plugs. You wouldn't wanna drain it and not be able to refill it
There are two drain plugs...one in the front of the tranny and one in the back.
If you raise your car in jack stands make sure you raise both ends so the car is level.
I priced a 17mm allen wrench a few weeks ago...$28 I ended up borrowing Jon's. I have done the bolt in vice grip method, and that works well too. You may want to get a cheap ($4) bottle pump and tube for filling. It is difficult to get the squeeze bottle around the frame horns.
I'm running Royal Purple without a problem. It is suppose to be okay for gl-4 yellow metals. I've run Castrol Synthetic blend in the past. I've heard Havoline oil is recommended by some. _________________ Steve
