Well I actually drove the super around today. As we approach the cooler months I think I will be needing some help with my heater/def.

The two cables between the seats dont do anything. I am missing the vents at the doghouse and the y pipe on the passenger side as well.

I think I want to put in electric fans for defrost and loose the floor heat anyway. Also have issues with the fresh air box, not sure if it works and I cant seem to make the air stop comming in when I drive.

Don't know a lot about beetles but aircooled VW heat systems all rely on the premise that if you can stop the heat from escaping in the rear it will come out the front. So before going with electric heaters, blowers and whatnot I'd first do what I can to tighten up the stock heat system. Maybe start with the thermostat, ya got one? Fix that Y sectionm hows yer tin? Seal up as many air leaks as y0u can find. Collectively they rob lotsoheat.

No thermostat and no y section. I may have a lead on the Y.

When you say thermostat are you talking about the vents that are at the bottom of the doghouse? If so, I am still a no.

Be sure you have both hoses from the heat exchangers to the junction boxes under the rear seat. Then, either replace the control cable (to the lever on the left) or wire the heater boxes open. I would close up the flaps under the rear seat, unless you want to mess with replacing the control cable for them. Floor heat is overrated anyway. Provided your heater channels are not too rusted out, this should give you some decent defroster action.
Leaks through the dash can be from several sources. Check the hoses from the air box, and be sure they are all there. Check that the 2 control knobs actually open & close the flaps on the air box. Block off the hole from the radio speaker. Check for any holes or openings that may have been added to the dash over the years. Also, you may want to add some sort of trunk liner to block the wind, if the original paperboard one is gone.
These are just a few suggestions. Hope this helps!

Also check the hood seal, if it is missing and or not fitting right, it will let alot more air into the trunk area when going down the road than you may think. Once this air gets into the trunk it has to go somewhere.......

The 2 knobs just above the ashtray & just below the radio control the flow from the air box. Turn them clockwise to shut off. If that doesn't work, look in the trunk & be sure the cables are connected to the little arms controlling the flaps.

The thermostat is located on the passenger side of engine near the pushrod tubes. it has a rod connected to it that runs up to the flappers in the doghouse. I had some difficulty finding a thermostat last time and it was pri$ey too. A quick check at wolfsburg west showed only two through 64.
