|
|
Our annual Poker Run will again be Mother's Day weekend. (Saturday) May 9 is the date. As in the past, we will start and end in Helen GA. Plan to come up on Friday and leave on Sunday for the maximum amount of fun. I believe we will hit our 50 car limit this year. We were at 42 cars last year.
I'll post details as they are worked out. I just wanted to post the date so people could make plans. _________________ 73 Typ481

Jake,
Your place is definitely a stop this year. Can't wait to see the new additions We are gonna incorporate some of your ideas from last year on the run. We will be planning the route and picking the other stops sometime late January. _________________ Steve

Cool!!! The new shop is amazing, I can't believe that we are almost done... Its only been 7 weeks! We have done it all ourselves with the exception of the drywall which I farmed out because I HATE to work with it..
I'll have some good stuff cooked up and I promise to have all the Boxsters and 996s stashed away and out of sight :-)
Jon, We'll put the 481 on the chassis dyno for a demo if you want! _________________ Jake Raby

We are finalizing the details and should be ready to start registering people soon. The shirt design is done. The route details will be done by end of day on Sunday. The last stop WILL be Jake's shop. This much we know.
We still need sponsors. Sponsors are listed on the shirts, but we need to have their info soon. Contact Clyde if you are intested. It takes some $$ to put this on and we want to make some money as this year's 'profit' will be going to Jim and Kathee to help with their bills. For those who don't know, Jim and Kathee were in a serious accident with their beetle before Christmas. Jim is still in a wheelchair and neither are able to work. They have not asked us to help. but they are members of our club and they could us as much help as we can give them. _________________ 73 Typ481

I have been getting questioned about why we limit the field to 50 cars. Here is my answer.
The problem with upping the limit from 50 is that there are only 52 cards in a deck, so it gets too complicated for our feeble minds to figure out how to do the poker hands with more. Also, and probably a bigger concern, is the logistics of finding stops along the route where we can park 50 cars at one time. We could break into smaller groups, but it is really a thrill to see a long line of VWs winding thru the mountain roads.
The first 50 people to get their registration info and money in will be eligible to win the prizes. The cost is $25.00 if registered before April 15th. After that it is $30.00 if slots remain. Registration fee lets you draw to win prizes and includes an event T-shirt. ( sure to be collectable )
If anyone wishes to follow us, but not actually enter, we have no problem with that, as long as they give first priority for parking to those who are entered.
I'm sure there are many alternatives to the way we do it. This is just what we feel most comfortable with.
Steve and I drove the route today and it is a good one. We haven't figured the mileage yet, but it looks like about 100 miles. We will publish the map in a week or two, but it starts in Helen, goes to Blairsville, then to Hayesville N.C., down to Hiawassee, thru Sautee, and ends in Cleveland at Jake Raby's shop.
To register send your name, shirt size, and money to Clyde Maddox, 536 Cherokee Ridge , Athens, GA 30606.
If you are sending a check, please make it out to Clyde. Additional shirts are available for $10.00 each. Everyone who wishes to draw cards for the prizes must register.
Don't wait till the last minute...you may get left out. _________________ 73 Typ481

We are in as sponsors, for sure.. Tell Beth what we need to do..
I agree with the 50 car rule.. Anyone who was on the Hippie Days runs back in the late 90s knows what its like to have two miles of cars running as a group...
I still think that some form of grouping and communication devices would make things simpler, especially when people get held up at traffic lights, etc, etc or just get lost from the group..
I have a new entrance into the field below my shop, a circle drive that will have plenty of parking for everyone and its easy to get in and out.. _________________ Jake Raby

We will have several people this year that have already driven the route. They will be spaced thru the cars so everyone should have a guide to follow. We may have several radios also.
Thank you for being a sponsor. Clyde will get in touch with Beth. _________________ 73 Typ481

Cool, I have delegated this responsibility to her... Actually she took the authority away from me so it wouldn't get screwed up! _________________ Jake Raby
