I aquired a 74 Standard Beetle from Mark last week. I got it to give to my sister-in-law who is having money troubles. She has two vehicles that both have 250000 + miles and need work. I figure I can maintain a VW easier than her other cars. That brings me to Sunday. There are some things I could use help with on the bug.
1. Window regulators-remove, clean, grease, and reinstall (Steve)
2. Pull engine- clean, put cool tin on correctly, fix oil leak (push rod tube seals most likely) (Shane)
3. New engine compartment seals (Me)
4.Figure out why all lights work except signals & flashers
5.Pull and rinse gas tank-reinstall
6. Put all back together using new seals and hoses
If anyone is willing to give some time, we'll start at noon and I'll buy pizza and have drinks.
Clyde I'll call with my list tomorrow.
If you can/will help, please let me know.
Thanks,

I'm in.
I've seen the car. It is a really nice solid and complete car (other than orange paint color). It will make a really nice driver. The body is straight with a little surface rust on the edges. The worst part of the car is rust behind the "half moon" vent on the passenger side. The bumpers are in great shape and the interior is also in good shape.
Jon is doing a really good deed with this car and could use a hand making this thing daily driver worthy.
I'm willing to tackle the window regulators and re-install door panels. If time permits, maybe I'll figure out how to install the front seats properly.
Please stop by Jon's on Sunday and pitch in if you can.

Friday night- the engine is out and down to a long block. Tomorrow it goes to Shane's house for cleaning, sealing, and tuning.
I'll be cleaning and painting the cool tin and then I'll take it to Shane for engine reassembly.
Still waiting for a wiring guy to step up. (hello James can you hear me?)
If everything gets done, Jon and I may drive this bug to Circle yer Wagens. _________________ 73 Typ481

I don't wanna be a project hog or anything, but if nobody takes it by sun. I can get the electrical straight after we get engine wrapped up. That is if time permits. Worst case, after we get engine done we can get it to my house and I'll straighten out wiring during the week. Whatever _________________ Shane Price

So far, thanks to Steve and Shane, we have a working window regulator on the passenger side and we have determined the drivers regulator is shot. The engine is torn down to the pistons, cleaned and resealed. It is ready to go back in.
I helped a little. I painted the cool tin, pulled out the old engine compartment seals, cleaned up residue from the carb fire it once had, and cleaned the starter connections and body.
(I also had some Dodge truck maint. to do) _________________ 73 Typ481

Don't worry the funs not over I think me and Jon are alot alike. We both think we can do alot more in 2 days then we actually can. I keep forgeting that just because I plan a weekend of work doesn't mean everything else stops and waits for me Jon brought the engine to me sat. morning. I finished it mon. evening but he just picked it up last night. I think there is still enough for a Volkstock 3 3/4. _________________ Shane Price

The engine is sealed and painted up all purdy. I have the gas tank cleaned and hole JB welded and a new screen inside. I fixed the ground in the rear and cleaned the grounds up front. Two wheels are painted and all hubcaps are polished and waxed. New window regulators are ordered and tomorrow I plan to put in the engine and replace the left front wheel cylinder. We'll be on the road later this week.
Oh yeah, the new engine compartment seals are in and the starter is cleaned and ready to go back in. _________________ 73 Typ481

Engine is in. Starter back on. One new regulator in place. I hope to be driving by the end of this weekend. _________________ 73 Typ481

I have been driving the bug and even took it to the club meeting Sunday. On the way to the Varsity, in the turn lane on Timothy Rd., it was confirmed that my charging system is not working. Luckily, I had my jump-box with me. Once it was hooked to the now dead battery, I finished the trip.
I charged the battery and am now driving on battery power until I fix the alternator. Today as I parked at work, the brake pedal went to the floor. ??? What the heck??? I've already been thru the brakes.
When I start out driving and the engine is cold, it runs great, but after about 2 miles it starts to surge. It is most noticeable in low RPMs. Any ideas? _________________ 73 Typ481
