Jon's 481 is not going to be the fastest "Thing" in the club for much longer!
I started restoring my Thing back in 1999.. when I tore into the vehicle it had been rear ended severely, but was TIV powered with a 2 liter MassIVe engine that has since been sold.
I worked on the Thing off and on for two years, repairing the body damage to the rear and painting it.. I then had it Line X'ed inside and out front and rear.. Then I decided to lift it up and really go crazy with it....
About that time the business here went wild and 181s started bring lots more money, so I decided not to chop it up or go crazy with it.
So fast forward another 6 years till today when I got the call that the interior work was finished as far as it could be without having other systems installed into the car...
I decided to go with 4 bucket seats and get rid of the rear bench seat... A center console will be built to go front to rear between the seats and will incorporate 12V coolers for drinks and etc... its something I have never seen done with a 181.
The upholstery work is the handy work of Billy and Christy Murdock of Murdock's Auto Upholstery in Brevard NC. The Murdocks also did the interior and top work on the MassIVe 79 Vert and will certainly do something soon with the MassIVe Double Cab!
As for the engine and trans, well I plan on going to a smaller rear tire, so I can keep the stock fenders all around and then coupling a Mikey 5 Speed that I have had for years to a 2316cc all torque engine with a tangerine Header that Chris built for me 7 years ago. I have not chosen EFI or carbs yet, but it'll probably stay carbureted..
I want to finish this 481 by next Spring for a couple of reasons... Its time, I haven't driven it in over TEN YEARS!
Who wants to have an "assembly party" here at aircooled heaven o help me hang all the simple stuff on the Thing and get the brakes and etc done?? _________________ Jake Raby

I'll help with putting it all back together, just say when. It will be difficult working on an ORANGE VW. Does Beth know what color it is? (florida, auburn, clemson, tennessee, ) _________________ 73 Typ481

Trust me.. I hear enough about the color of the Thing from Beth..
It would be a different story if:
1- Pumpkin Orange wasn't the original color of the car.
2- I hadn't painted in in 2000, four years before I even paid attention to a Football game..
Considering the other two factory color possibilities I'll take Orange.. Yellow is the color of Piss and White= Retreat... Thats not happening!
And I will not repaint it anyway! _________________ Jake Raby

I would have to agree.... A thing is one of few cars that look good in orange(IMHO). Besides, you can get away with alot if your pimpin a massIVe _________________ Shane Price
