OK, I am trying to get the damn gland nut off and I am at a loss. 500 ft lb tq impact wrench and nothing, gallons of PB and nothing, angle iron with a 1/2" breaker and........
3/4" breaker and........
and at the advise of the idiot manual "use a sharp chisel and hit about 1/4" back from tip of one side" and......
It sheers off. I had the angle iron on it, wife standing on the opposite head, 24" 3/4" breaker bar with a 4' cheater and nothing but !!snap!!. Tomorrow, unless you guys have an idea, I will be borrowing my father-in-laws 1" impact wrench. 1200ft lb tq and get it.

That's the ticket! The torquemeister will get it. If it will still fit the mangled nut. I also have one you can borrow. _________________ 73 Typ481

Yep, Some bolts or screws that are hard to break loose and are damage to the point that a tool won't fit it you can get in to the edge of it with a hammer and chisel. But this is usually for stuff like small screws and as a last resort. Not a gland nut torque to 250+ ft lbs. I guess he couldn't find the channel-lock pliers. You can see the edge that looks carved into. That dude aint built many vw engines if he thought he was gonna turn that thing like that. _________________ Shane Price

Hey Guys...........the dip shit that took the chisel to it is me!!!!!!. I have now used a 250lb, 650lb and a 1450lb impact wrench and that bastard won't budge. I thought the damn thing would sheer off with this bad ass on it but she held in there.
Gonna track down a torque multiplying tool and then call it quits. _________________ 71 Standard Beetle "Big Bird"

Sounds like someone used loctite.. Hit it with a torch and the loctite will be compromised, then you can break torque on it.
Why the hell did you use a chisel on it?? Thats medieval mechanic work.
If all else fails load it up and bring it to me. _________________ Jake Raby

I know mechanics that use a hammer and punch to get fan clutches off of waterpumps instead of the big fan wrench. I guess it works but it looks like s**t. It looks shade tree and I hate that s**T! _________________ Shane Price

I don't mean to sound like a know it all, but impact wrenches need really big hoses to put out their full power. We've got a 1/2" line at work for our big gun.
I had a stubborn gland nut on the first engine in my bug back in '95, and took it to a diesel repair place, where they zipped it loose in a second. _________________ '69 Bug, 1776, dual kadrons, Web 111 cam

I didnt think of that. Good point Clyde. You can have the badest ass gun in th land. But if you cant get pressure and volume to it its useless. Then again I have a little rinky-dink 17gal comp. with an old 3/8 airhose. I put my good Snap-on impact on it and it zips glandnuts right off. Do you have enough air pressure? _________________ Shane Price

You are correct, it's a 1" line. My father in law is/was a diesel mechanic so it was not under powered.
Thanks to Eric (39coupe), I now have the gland nut off. It didn't happen like I've seen in the videos. I put the torque multiplier on, applied a 1/2" drive ratchet with a 7/16" socket, put my ass in to it and.......................nothing. So, I put on a 4' cheater and ......................snap!. There's a trip to Sears for a ratchet replacement. Then I put on a box end wrench, 6' cheater pipe, balanced myself with with a broom and climbed on...........nothing. So I bounced and bounced and bounced and eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek! Finally, the damn thing is off!
So, for someone smarter than me, please figure out the total torque value of a torque multiplier, 6' cheater with 208lbs on the end..........bouncing.
There was half a bottle of red loc tite on the damn thing. _________________ 71 Standard Beetle "Big Bird"
