Welded up the clutch cable guide tube in Greg's car back in January. Just got around to posting it.
First you cut an access hole, so you can get in there. Hole was cut about a 1/2" too far to the rear (I barely hit the seat belt anchor).
Here's a view of the original bracket, which is broken, and squeeks every time the pedal is pushed to the floor. See the scratches on the tunnel wall just above the bracket:
Here's the angle iron repair peice, welded and solid. Don't get it too hot, there's a fuel line in there.
I pried up the flap and tacked it in place, layed the carpet back over it, and no one could tell I did it 'til they saw this. _________________ '69 Bug, 1776, dual kadrons, Web 111 cam

Well.... Looks Like I get to do the same thing..... Was going to cut the hole and then weld some nuts to the back side. Plan on making a new plate slightly larger so that I can bolt it on and off if I ever need to get back in there.
Thanks for the images. |

No separation involved. The tube is held in place by a real thin metal strap (like steel strapping material on a shipping crate). The strap breaks, and you can hear the strap scrape the side of the tunnel when you use the clutch. It's really no big deal, but it's the kind of thing that makes me crazy. And I had some free time and a new heater, and a serious case of cabin fever . _________________ '69 Bug, 1776, dual kadrons, Web 111 cam

HHHEEEEYYYYY I thought that interior looked familiar! but seriously I really appreciated the extra effort on that repair, it needed to be done at some point. |

Good job! Shorty and the gang of retired bug mechanics have told me about the hundreds of bugs they've done this to but I've never seen it done. How do you know where the bracket is, or did you just guess? Is that your first one or or have you done others? Just curious. _________________ Shane Price

I did mine like 10 years ago. I read about it in some of Gene Berg's writings. He says:
"Weld in a 1" long 1" angle bracket to the floor inside the tunnel. Then pry the clutch cable tube down to it and carefully weld it to the bracket. If you get the tube too hot or melt some weld inside the tube, you may not get the cable back into the tube. I cut a hole with a 4" hole saw, in the tunnel, 6" behind the e-brake pivot pin, alittle over half way down on the passenger side".
I used 1 1/2" or 2" angle iron. I only bent the tube down like 1/2"
I also cut the hole with a cutoff wheel, so I could bend the flap back for strength. My car has a big hole there still. You can feel it thru the carpet. I've heard of guys drilling their tunnel full of holes to lighten it for drag racing- I wouldn't consider removing vertebrae a performance inhancement . _________________ '69 Bug, 1776, dual kadrons, Web 111 cam

I agree. Something about cutting up the tunnel and weakening it makes me nervous. It would suck to hit a bump and have your bug bend in half. _________________ Shane Price
