Just tried out new to me Hunter Tune-in on the car wheel balancer.

Balances tire, wheel, brake drum on 14 inch, 15 inch, 4 bolt, or wide 5.
Doesn't fit alloy type wheels, just VW steel. 5 out of 8 wheels on 4 cars needed weights changed. Noticeable difference in ride.

That looks like a neat set up. Can you describe more about the picture and how it works? Very cool.

The unit in front of the wheel has an electric motor to spin the wheel up to 70+ MPH. When the side lever is moved forward, it turns on the motor and applies the spinning pulley to the tire. When you find the out of balance speed, you grip one of the four spools on the balancer attached to the wheel. Two of the spools change the amount of weights needed by changing two levers with weights attached closer or farther apart. When the levers are opposite, there is no added weight. As they move towards each other the combined weight can add up to about 4 ounces. The other 2 spools rotate the levers around the inside of the balancer to position where the weight needs to be applied to the rim. The operator adjust by feel to tell when the vibration is gone or in some cases by watching bumper or spring movement. When the wheel is balanced, The wheel is stopped and a window on the wheel balancer indicates the amount of weight needed and an arrow points to the location to install the weight. Simple concept that works at road speeds.

We used to have one of those wheel balancers in our shop, back in the day. It was the only way to get rid of that annoying Super Beetle front end shimmy.

Anyone with std. wheels having balance problems, I will be glad to try to help. Out of round tires, bent rims or loose linkage won't be improved.

Bob,
Do you still have your balancer? I'm having a hard time finding a place around Athens that is open on Saturday (Hopewell is closed on weekend) that will balance wide fives. I could use your help. I'm gonna try Porterfield in Watkinsville tomorrow morning to see if they will balance them, if not then I'm at your mercy. Please call me at 404-405-0103.
Thanks.

I finally got my tires balanced last Monday. Porterfield in Watkinsville could not do it last Saturday & I showed up when they were closing at noon. They took the tires to the Athens store and had the commercial division balance them. What a pain, but the wheels are finally on!
