Hi there. I have a 65 Bug that was running well. Bright red in case you seen it around town. After sitting through the winter, I'm having trouble getting the engine started. I have spark to all cylinders and gas flowing to the carb when I crank. Engine will crank and turnover but not run. If I unplug the choke it will run for a few seconds and then stop. Seems like this should be an easy fix. Any insight or suggestions for troubleshooting?? Thanks! J

Hi Josh, welcome to the forums. Very Happy Are you saying that the engine will start and run for a short time, then it dies? If so, check the needle valve in the carb. It could be stuck and not allow you to have a flow of gas.
Does your carb have an electric cut-off ?

Also, check your points to be sure they are good and set properly.

Hi, Jon. thanks for the reply. That's it exactly. It will start but immediately die like it ran out of gas. Pretty sure there is no electric cut off on the carb. I'm not mechanically advanced, but I like to figure things out. I'll study the Haynes manual and then take a look at the carb needle and points. Prior to this it was running great, so I'm assuming it's something simple. Any chance it could be the fuel pump? thanks again for your time in replying.

Hi, Guys.

I finally found some time to get into the carb today. Needle valve and all jets appeared clean. As I was putting the upper half back on, I noticed the needle valve was indeed sticking. After a few good blasts of carb cleaner, it started back up and we were out on the road again. Thank you very much for your insight!

Take care,
J>
