Got it home . . .
[/img] disassembly was inevitable after pulling all the glass and finding a few leaks that would have become major rust producers if not taken care of . .

WOW, you finally get to own something with a REAL engine in it! YAY!!!
The auto tranny isn't bad, but they make del hellacious engine oil temps due to the hot ass torque converter. It needs a Camper Special :-) _________________ Jake Raby

Gotcha covered. Do you have the complete core that came out of it? What does it look like?
Sounds like you and Jon need to do simultaneous builds at the Tech Weekend at my place in the Spring. _________________ Jake Raby

This was a complete running / driving 2L FI Automatic, so . . .yes, I've got the complete engine with working Fuel Injection....
This bus was shipped here from California a little over a year ago by the P.O. so... not much rust at all.
I replaced the fuel pump and all fuel lines after I got it home and it fired right up with just a touch of the starter.
The previous owner claimed he spent $5000 on the engine rebuild a year ago but I have my doubts. (I didn't pay near that for the whole bus) It is just a bit too grimey/nasty to have had that much put into it that recently. I'll post a few pics this evening. _________________ '58 RHD 2110cc Beetle

Well, the PO wasted 5K.. Whoever did the work was too dumb to install the air control flaps... That means that more than likely the oil cooler wasn't getting any charge air. But thats the only thing that jumps out at me in the pics except the broken impeller blade on the fan and the fact that it used to have A/C... Those tail pipes sure are white.. They were either running AVGAS, Coleman lantern fuel or a really lean gasoline mixture..
Do a compression and leak down test and know where you stand before you have an awesome bus with a busted heart. If I had to bet some guy with 30 years of T1 experience "was there" last and that generally isn't promising for the life of a Type 4..
But its a good core.:-) _________________ Jake Raby

It still had all the AC stuff in the bus except for the compressor, I would like to get that working again too..
Good core sounds like a good start to me!....
I only drove the bus about 6 miles before disassembly began so hopefully it didn't get too warm.. _________________ '58 RHD 2110cc Beetle

Mike you've put in some major work on that bus! It is looking good. Have you decided on a paint scheme yet? FI Camper Special with AC and auto tranny...nice! Might as well through on some ABS brakes and power windows _________________ Steve

Now if I could just get another day or two off work so I can finish removing the old paint! Gonna go back with the original color Steve. Thought about it quite a bit and I don't recall seeing a lot of campers that color so . . . . . . Power windows? Hmmmm....... _________________ '58 RHD 2110cc Beetle

There's a good reason you don't see many campers that color. _________________ 73 Typ481
