It probably is a 1.8 engine based on those symptoms.. In that case it will like the smaller ventures a lot better. _________________ Jake Raby

See, thats why you verify mechanical integrity first, before EVER trying to tune.
That engine is incapable of being tuned, all the compression is low and the percentage of differential creates to least is way out of the effective range.
Were these numbers gathered with a warm engine? Were the throttles locked wide open?

If they weren't the numbers will all be low and will vary by the synchronization of the carbs/ intake characteristics. _________________ Jake Raby

Yep. I forgot that step. And boy do I feel stupid . Here is the new numbers and I was able to preform a leak down test thanks to Clyde loaning me the tool.
Compression Test.
1: 130
2: 149
3: 140
4: 138
Leak Down Test. 100psi
1: 90psi
2: 97psi
3: 96psi
4: 90psi
I also changed the jetting on the carbs. Engine seems to be running smoothly. Spark plugs have a nice color. MPG is unknown at this time.
Current Dual Weber numbers:
Venturi - 28
Main Jet - 1.30
Air Correction Jet - 2.00
Emulsion Tube - F11
Pump Jet - .50
Idle Jet - .55
Starter Jet - 8of5 _________________ 1963 Beetle

Big difference once the chambers can fill, huh?? Lol
Look good now! On the leakdown I expect they are holding the stated values and not leaking that amount? _________________ Jake Raby

This gives me hope that my current type 4 may not be so bad after all. We did not have the throttles locked open when we checked the compression. I'll do it again this weekend. Thanks James. _________________ 73 Typ481

Jon, Your engine made excellent RWHP on the dyno.. No issues with it, its stronger than its supposed to be! It only had 58K original miles on it when we installed it into the 481.
Unless a compression test is done warm and with the throttles @ WOT it is absolutely 100% worthless. _________________ Jake Raby

Jake, No problems with the type 4 in the Thing! The engine I was referring to was the one in my 76 Westy. I also bought a wrecked 77 Bus that was a daily driver till it hit a jeep. Now I have another type 4. _________________ 73 Typ481
