Its hydraulic... thats why, because the lifters trace the heel of the lobe.

Got the oil pump cleaned up a bit today. Here is a couple of 'before' pics.....
the gears inside look to be in very good shape and the main tog looks great too. Definitely a keeper.
after a little elbow grease . . .

first coat on the housing.........
