Hello everybody it's Jeff again.
I just had a fuel pump go out and i replaced it with a
Airtex #1071 mecanical pump,everything looks right even rebuildable and evertthing.
The problem is the plunger lever on the old pump sticks out of the pump almost 1/8 inch and the new pump the lever is recessed slightly in the pump maby 1/8 inch for a total diffrence of 1/4 inch
and it seems not to bee enough stroke to pump any fuel at all.
I thought i had it figured out but but but but . (stumped)
I know im not the first new bee to have this problem ?

Is there diffrent thickness's of fuel flange's.
Is there diffrent length push rods for fuel pumps.
Mine are diffrent from each other .

Everything i have read say they just bolt on and go.
But it dont go if the push rod is to short or the fuel flange is to thick
which is eaiser fix or cheeper fix .

You are on the right track. There are two different fuel pumps. One for generator engines and a different one for alternator engines. The alternator one is at an angle and the generator one is straight up and down. Not only are the fuel pumps different, but as you guessed, they have different length push rods. Which one you need depends on whether or not your Vdub has been updated to an alternator. You should get the direct replacement for the one you took off for everything to fit and work right. Modifications can be made, but can take some extra effort to work.

I bought the one for the genorator which is what i have !
Yes its straight up and down,and so is the old one !
I will figure it out !

That was it !
Went to the long push rod and it solved it.
Droped a new set of rear shocks on it and went for a Sun set ride
with tunder storms in the backgroung and it was killer !

Well things seem to be better but the problem came back!
I was crusin around early evening on a 30-45 min ride things seem ok and then i noticed i was almost out of gas and then it sputtered
and slowed down sputtered and slowed even more and again stopped !
So i got about 4 gals of gas in it and started it back up and sputter sputter and stop.
Could there be trash in the tank it was sealed supposley about 10 months ago?
Is there a easy way to check if there is trash in the tank.
Could the fuel line be sucking flat ? The fuel line seems sturdy.
Maby the tech day will help me with this check.

There could be trash in the tank. I have hear of folks doing a tank seal themselves and not letting it cure properly and it peeling and causing havoc on the fuel system. Might be trash in the bowl of the carb, jet or both.

Well it looks like there was water in my gas tank !
So i pulled it ,removed the strainer and the float and all hoses,
washed it out with gas.
Pulled all the gas lines off and blew the hard lines out and replaced
all the soft fuel lines,also another fuel filter,so far so good.
Maby at the Tech day someone can show me how to replace the paper in the oil bath air filter,if there is time.
