Been driving the bug all week... Have two tech questions for you guys.

(1) Having a little hesitation when on the expressway and lift off the gas... If I keep a little pedal it's smooth but does sputter from time to time. Is this related to the dual 34's and the 009 distributors? Would a vacuum advance distributor be a better choice and if so would I tie both carb vacuum ports (teed) or just pull from one intake? Currently I have these vacuumed lines connected with a hose to try and equalize the vacuum.

(2) What should I set the timing at..? I'm about 5 deg advanced now but yesterday (in the heat) I noticed some pinging under load on the expressway. I assume she was getting a little hot so I backed out of it. What is the most advance I can get away with?

1500, single port, dual 34's, 87mm jugs.

When the distributor is fully advanced, I think that 30 degrees is a good place to start. Are you using a timing light or static?

well here is a question to your question... my pulley has three notches. Two close together then another about 10 degrees off to the left. I have been using the two notches as my timing marks because it would run like poop otherwise....

Timed off the two marks I would say I'm about 15deg. advanced at 700 RPM.

Is this too far. Just did not run well any less. Confused

Hmm, the notches are 5 degrees, 7.5 degrees and 10 degrees BTDC on a stock pulley, I think. From what I know about mechanical only distributors, I think you have to time it where it's fully advanced (about 3000 rpm) and let the idle advance fall where it may. Sounds like you're like me, you have the stock pulley which doesn't have degrees. You need a timing light that has a degree wheel on it. The degree wheel lets you use your TDC marking for timing purposes. I'd be happy to help you time it using my timing light. I'm located in jefferson.

Thanks... I guess what I'll do is get a billet degree pulley. Kind of need it anyway to match the motor now.

Thanks for the offer. Just wanted to make sure i was not doing harm to the fresh motor.

In this heat what weight oil do most bug guys use?

I use Brad Penn 20w-50. Clyde sells it and it is good stuff. Cool

I have went back to driving the bug in the heat from Winder to Marietta everyday in the traffic. Actually it's been lots of fun other than the heat.
The car is doing well MPG is around 30.
I need to contact clyde and get the eletronic ignition like we put on gregs at tech day.
I will be adjusting the cluth cable soon,and then i need to check the valves.
So Clyde if you see this call me please

Changed the oil out (break in oil) with 20W-50 and added detergents that you just don't get in the newer oils. Also changed out the point set. Remebered that they were the original set from when we got the Bug. Set the Dwell at 48 and the timing at 7.5 BTDC. Running (not as good) so I think I'll play with the timing and maybe go to 10 BTDC.

The full advance is more important than the idle advance. At full advance it should be 30 degrees, then let idle fall wherever.

Agree.... I have ordered the new billet pully. will just need to play it by ear until it get here. No big rush. Son is still learning to drive the stick.

Went on line and printed up a paper timing wheel. Taped it to the pulley and marked 15-30 ATDC. Set timing to 30 at 3,000 rpm and then adjusted the carbs (2 turns out from full in). Bug is running great.
