PostPosted: Mon Jan 10, 2011 5:26 pm    Post subject: Heads Reply with quote

I just got a junk engine that I may teardown this week. I thought it would be a good excuse to start a new topic. I poped the v/c's and got the # off the heads 311101375 and 311101375g. My book says they're F.I. t3 heads with no ledge. Its a bug case and it came out of a bug. Anyone know anything about these ? Are they good for a t1 mild performance build? If they're not cracked that is.

You want 8mm valve stems. If they're 9mm, it'll be a little harder to find new exhaust valves and guides, plus the FI valve heads are a little smaller than carbed valves. And most people don't have the reamers and seat cutters for the FI sizes.

I took a set of FI heads to Gabriels for a rebuild a few years ago, and they kinda laughed at me and said "these ain't worth rebuilding."

These arnt like bug FI heads. Theyre 35.5x32. T3 FI heads. From what I read theyre same as dp carb bug heads but alittle higher comp.

More compression is just what you want. 8:1 with a stock cam is good.

What do you think of scat cams? Like a C20, which seems to be a smll step up from stock.

C-25 is just like the Engle W-100. High torque at low rpms. Don't have to wind it out like crazy all the time. It idles smooth too.

ok. I started tearing engine down. Heads are in realy good shape. No cracks. A broke fin here and there but nothing to worry about. I need to pop the valves out and look at guides. Dont really matter though. i'm goonna put in new guides and do a valve job. One head has a ledge and other does not. i will just bring em to you to be cc'd Clyde. Can you cut the seats? I can send em to percision and have em 3 angled if you cant.

I can cut the seats, CC them, and flycut them to match. Can't grind valves, though.

Awsome. I'll get with you probably this weekend once I know alittle more about these heads and decide what I'm gonna build.

REPLACE the exhaust valves. Once you experience a dropped exhaust valve, you'll understand why.

Grinding intakes is fine, until they are cut enough to become knife edged (then they'll burn) but don't play with the exhaust..

Oh yeah. I always replace exhaust valves. I've seen what happens when you downshift on the exit ramp on 80k+ engine. Any engine I build at the very least gets exhaust valves and guides. After 80k its a tickin time bomb.

BTW Jake, You mentioned about me using your balancer to balance my internals when I built my engine. Is that still doable?
