Just read this on the Samba. I can't wait. Maybe Keith will lead a drive thru the mountains.

It is being held in Hiawassee. Very Happy

AWESOME!!!
BUT I don't think they want Keith to lead a cruise.. Last time that happened the outcome wasn't too good.. he and I loved sliding around on the sleet and ice covered roads of blood mountain!

That was 1999, the last time I drove my 181!

Everytime I lead a drive, people complain about getting their vw 181's a little dirty!!! Everyone complains that is, except Jake Raby & we both just have a good time. I think vw things should be driven like the field tested vehicle they were meant to be, not some overrestored Sunday afternoon cruiser....

I could not agree more... The only problem is we both share the same USMC definition of "the field".

I wonder what those pansies would have thought about my escapade through the wild flower conservation area?? What I would have given to see the looks on their faces if they'd been in my 181 the day that you were when we stood it up on it's side 85 degrees and damn near put it on it's lid!

Keith, I say lets do our own run through those forest service roads at Neal's Gap and go all the way into North carolina.. I can have the Pinzgauer as a chase vehicle in case we submerge a 181 over it's doors in the river at a fording point :-)

We need to plan the 'alternate' cruise. I want to drive the unpaved-unknown roads. Leave the sissy boys behind. At the end of the day, we will be the ones with tales to tell. Wink

Maybe we should take a poll on the Samba and see how much interest there is in REALLY driving in the mountains.

Don't even bother with a poll.. We'll bust off from the rest of the crowd and disappear like Keith does and have our own drive.. Then come back with 181s that look like they've been through combat!

I still get a chuckle when I think of Jake straightening out the turn on US 64 in Franklin, NC right through the flower patch in the cloverleaf!!! His orange VW 181 Kuebel trailed bright red marigolds, poppies, or some sort of DOT approved flowers most of the way back to N Georgia from our time with the gentle folks at Kuebel Treffen East....those DOT boys are still trying to figure out what plowed up those ruts in their little roadside flower garden!!!

But my favorite was when the split window bus group came from Asheville to pick up the '66 Westfalen camper Jake hung on me back a couple of years ago.... "Would you like a ride through the bottoms in the thing before you head back to the mtns," Jake asked the camper enthusiasts. I was all over that, 'cause I knew we were in for a mud slinging good time... Rip Roaring, I tell you!!! We were within a knat's ass of putting that roll bar to use as we hung on 2 wheels for what seemed like an eternity, faces turning white in the process!!! I've never seen a group so happy to climb back in their type 2's and head for the hills...

Back when we had those winter drives in January, we just weren't happy unless we had some ice & snow and at least one Thing on the end of a tow cable...

Thats the closest I've ever come to rolling a vehicle when it didn't actually end up on its lid..

The flower bed probably flourished from my "aeration" :-)

The Kubel Treffen is only a month away. Rooms are still available at the discount rate and there is still time to pre-register.

I've got my room and registration is in the mail. Cool

It is this weekend! I've almost got the Thing ready and with any luck I'll be towing my new trailer with my camping gear in it. Very Happy

Anyone else from Athens going to be there?
