It has been a while since I updated my progress on the Westy. With Clyde's help we checked the compression (correctly this time) and had a range from 110 to 118 on all 4 cylinders.

We pulled the engine and transaxle out of the bus. The engine is basically going back in as is, but maybe a little cleaner. A replacement trans is going in and the shift rod has been cleaned and new bushings istalled.

I plan to drive it Jake's for our weekend and then drive it to Bug-a-Paluzza.

The bus has now made two trips, one to Jake's and one to Bug-a-Paluza. She ran well on both trips with a little variation in throttle response due to the weather and the progressive carb.
I do have an exhaust leak that I need to fix. When I let off the gas without engaging the clutch it sounds like a shootgun blast. (just ask Greg, John, or Clyde)

One real concern I have, is that my engine is not running warm enough. The oil is showing condesation in the fill tube - nice and milky white. Even after 4 hours of driving thru the mountains the exhaust is the only part on my engine that feels hot. I can rest my hand on any other part of the engine without it feeling hot.
My timing is at 28 degrees full advance. I have a 2.0L with a progressive carb. The engine starts right up and runs with good power. The only thing I can think to do is to give it a couple more degrees of timing.
Any thoughts or ideas? Jake, what are your thoughts? (I know what you think about my carb)

The condensation is more notable where the oil has heavy fuel intrusion.. Probably from the damn progressive and rich running at part throttle.

Put an OT and CHT gauge in it and start tuning, you can increase oil temps easily by limiting the airflow through the oil cooler, by changing the position of the diverter flap that directs air into the cooler. You can have overheated heads and cool oil, because they are unrelated.

Or maybe you need to drive it harder.

I figured you would say that. I drove it pretty hard thru the mountains, but it still seemed cool.

How do I check to see if my thermostat is working?

I figured I'd add our bus to the list...I've been looking for a while for a good solid bus that I could afford. I found this '74 camper last weekend...appears to be in pretty good shape. The PO converted it to FI, which so far has been a good thing.

There is a breather box on the top of the 1800cc engine in my bus that I'm concerned about. Normally I'd just route it to the air filter box and be done...but....with FI I've heard that can muck up the AFM. Any thoughts on how/where to route it. I'd like to get the original emissions stuff working but I've heard that some of the valves and diaphragms are NLA.

Time for some updates on buses.

I am replacing the oil cooler and hope to finish by the end of the weekend. I made room in the garage to work since it keeps raining. (good thing)

So how is your bus coming: Bob, Mike, Johnny, Joe, Greg, John, Pete, Mark O., nephew Joe, and anyone else with a bus?

Except for rehanging the sliding door, my bus is ready for its body massage and new paint. Cool I'm taking it hopefully the first week of August to the body shop.

I had to go buy some taller jack stands before I could do anything underneath the bus. Got the steering dampener and front shocks replaced.

I promise, clyde, I'll get the brake booster swapped out at some point Sad

EDIT: I want to make sure I take care of the oil leaks. I've got the oil cooler seals and pushrod tube seals coming from clyde but I've got a leak up near the transmission nose cone. Any thoughts there? I'm going to climb under there tonight and see if I can pinpoint any more potential leaks.

Greg, it would be a good idea to pressure wash the underside of your bus before Volkstock. That should make it easier to track down leaks.

UPDATE: I have heat!! After replacing the many connectors, hoses, and cables, I now have noticeable heat. It will be even more noticeable once I patch the holes in the nose and floor Smile Finally got the brake booster in as well. Never realized how well these busses could stop. I also got around to routing the breather hose out of the engine compartment. It was making a mess. I'm waiting on attaching it to the S-boot to when I can tell/test if it's leaning out the mixture.

I think my next big project is wiring up a 12volt power source for when I'm hooked up to shore power.

Anybody else notice that when you work on a bus, most of time you're working blind and on your back Rolling Eyes
