Why? Are you moving to Alaska? Laughing Seriously, why do you need a block heater? I've driven aircooled VWs for most of my life and have never needed a block heater.

Maybe it is a good idea, I've never really thought about it.

I think it would be better on the engine, because warm oil flows better. I also read that mpg plummets when an engine is cold. Maybe Jake can weigh in on this.

Plus I'm from down south, so sometimes this is like Alaska to me.

I have read that anytime you start a cold engine summer or winter that letting it idle for about 60 seconds is helpful to the engine. I have also read that you should not warm up the engine but just start and go. I guess the point of having a multiple viscosity oil is to eliminate the need for a warm up period.

I grew up in Michigan, and my Dad used to keep a light bulb under the hood of his worktruck every night in the winter. I think it was more to prevent freezing than anything else. Seemed like every winter we knew someone who wound up with a cracked engine block. This was typically due to an owner not keeping their antifreeze ratio correct.

Our VW's are air cooled, so no need to worry about frozen blocks.

Parking in a garage is about all they need in my opinion.

What is this "garage" thing you speak of, and do people really park in them? Shocked
