Any recommendations for someone local who can inspect, test, diagnose, and/or rebuild my starter/solonoid and generator? All was working when I last ran the car (Yikes -- almost 4 years ago!) but would like to make sure all of this is up to snuff before I put it all back together, and electric motors are not my specialty. (Come to think of it, nothing is my specialty, but I try not to think about that too much.)

Check with Nash Heavy Duty Truck Parts in Winterville. They have a generator/alternator department in their shop. Re-worked the generator for my Thing a couple of years ago. _________________ Ya can't have too many VDUBS.

Ok, thanks Jake. Maybe I'll take the starter/solenoid to one place, and the generator to other, decide which I like better. The main thing is that both seem to have experience working with VW stuff. _________________ 1965 Beetle |

Finally got around to doing this. Dropped the generator off Thursday afternoon, and they called Friday morning to say it's done! And only $20! I would be skeptical, except I was quite impressed going in there. Older guys (i.e., more experienced) working the counter, working in back, answering phones. A steady stream of customers. Racks and racks of generators, alternators, starters. People coming and going. I plunked my gen on the counter, and mentioned it was from an air-cooled VW, but he seemed to know that before I even finished talking.
Plus, the place has an "old-tyme" feel to it. Reminds me, in a way, of Marvin's Shoe Service in downtown Athens. Traditional good work done for a fair price. Of course, I haven't run it yet (hopefully soon!) but I'm willing to be I'm good to go.
Thanks for the recommendations! _________________ 1965 Beetle |
