My oil light keeps coming on and off while I'm driving and I am wondering what the most common cause of this is. Does it just need an oil change? Is it safe to drive it like that? A friend told me I may be messing up the engine by driving it with the light going on and off like that. The oil was a little low so I put more in. The car is also hesitating a little - may be related, maybe not. Any clues?

The oil light coming on and off means it's losing oil pressure....never a good thing Sad BUT I'd check some other things first. It may be an electricial issue. I'd check to make sure the oil pressure wire isn't grounding in the engine compartment. Also, you may want to try another oil pressure switch first to see if that is the cause, that's easy to swap. Lastly, if all that checks out....the oil may be thinning out when it heats up. What kind/weight of oil are you running now?

Idiot light sender was shot. Discovered it after an oil change. Fired it up, oil light off, checked timing, dwell, adjusted carb, all while it ran. Oil light was bright and steady when I went to shut it off Surprised. Installed regular gauge, it read 20 psi at idle Smile
