Thanks to Joe for diagnosing a brake "OPPORTUNITY" on Tweety during Volkstock. Dianosis = Brake peddle travelling way too far - Not able to bleed rear wheels at all and (1) bleeder valve AWOL (Passenger Rear).

Monday - 8/26

* Removed both wheels and drums to take a closer look.
* No evidence of leaking on passenger rear, but also no fluid at brake hose or brake line!! - (Able to blow air thru them - Appears that there is no blockage)
* Lot's of brake fluid leaking evidence on drivers side rear (on brake cylinder, brake shoes, springs and brake plate. - Didn't someone say this stuff is corrosive?)......but like the opposite side...no fluid at brake hose or brake line. - (Able to blow air thru them - Appears that there is no blockage)
* Next checked at the rear 3 way connector and no fluid coming out of the brake line coming from the master cylinder.

I am planning to continue the "hunt" tonight after work. Thinking master cylinder issue could be the culprit. Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated. - (Especially since I had brake fluid all throughout the drivers side rear - New parts here I assume?)

Ken

I'm not the best to respond but.....if you can blow air from the master cylinder to each rear wheel then the mc has to be the cause, but first make sure the mc is getting fluid, maybe the hose from the mc to the resviour is blocked.

Yep, I was a blowing the lines to make sure there were no blockages in the rear the 1st night. The brake line from the master cylinder to the rear of the car (to the 3 way connector) is also clear. I had the ability to stop the car on Sunday, so I assume at least one of the lines coming down from the resevoir is not clogged. I will check the other one tonight.

Update and findings last night:

1. Took drivers side front wheel off to see the master cyclinder. - (It is a rusty looking piece of metal)
2. Noticed a lot of brake fluid around the master cylinder, but remembered Jon's bleeder machine/pump spilled some on Sunday when his hose exploded. - (Cleaned it up!)
3. Blew air thru the brake line to the rear of the car and no blockage found.
4. Noticed some nasty buildup around the bottom of the gas tank nut. Wiped it off and found that we also have a small leak/pin hole in the bottom of the gas tank. - (Small as in "oh crap" I need to make it stop leaking out right now as it is emptying the tank of gas) - Had to call the little lady into the garage to assist with this little task!! What a pain in the arse that turned out to be as I had just topped of the car with gas on Saturday.......(gas everywhere, toxic fumes, full tank of gas made the tank extremely heavy and quite fun to try to pour into a gas can using a funnel.
5. The hole in the bottom of the gas tank solves the mystery of why we smell gas in the car after every fill up. - (Maybe it has something to do with the hole in the gas tank????????) Embarassed

Next steps: (Tonight)

* Check the line from the resevoir to the rear of the master cylinder to make sure it isn't blocked.....If not, pull out the MC and start making parts list for CLYDE!!

Took the Master Cylinder out tonight. - (The lines coming down from the reservoir to the Master Cylinder are not clogged, but in need of some attention)

Also took a look at the spare gas tank I had on the shelf....Apparently it had the same issue as the tank I just took out of TWEETY! - (Holes in the exact same spot)

Anyone seen this before? Is it a known issue on these Beetle tanks?
Any other option other than purchasing a new tank or trying to locate a good used tank?

That location looks like where water would collect instead of going to the engine. That might explain why it's rusting out. No idea how but I would think it could be patched.

edit: from what I've heard new tanks are thinner but your results may vary Smile

You can reseal the tank yourself with a kit from masterseries or cream. Or you can have an old school radiator shop do it for you.

A few customers have used this place:

I've never had luck with JB Weld when it stays in contact with gas.
It is possible to have them welded.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and comments.
At $139.00 for a new tank, we are definately thinking about a repair versus a new tank purchase.

Parts list for the brake repairs has been created and sent to Clyde.

Ken put new wheel cylinders in both rear wheels - if I remember was that (Drivers Side) the brake line was swollen shut and it ate the breaks, overheated the wheel cylinder damaged the rubber seals.
food for thought- Gary

Parts supplied by Clyde were picked up Saturday pm.
Spent the evening at the PRESIDENTS place watching the DAWGS!!
(Thank you Mary for a wonderful time)

Wife demanded my time Sunday/Monday so I plan on installing parts on TWEETY this week.

"Hopefully she will be able to STOP as well as that ORANGE bug Jon mentioned!!"

I hate the new fuel tanks. they fit like crap, are light gauge material and are filled with paint inside that clogs fuel systems like crazy.

I'd rather have an old tank thats been cleaned and sealed (properly) as a new one. I have Gainesville radiator do our tanks and they do an awesome job.

Not a lot of work being done on the brakes this week - Work SUX!!

Hoping to get to it this coming weekend.
Based on all of the feedback/posts, I am going to have the original tank worked on/repaired as suggested by many of you.

I appreciate all of the guidance!!

:-)
