|
|
Anyone have any clue who might have end play shims for for my 40hp motor? I learned they're a different size (larger ID but same OD) than the 1300-1600 ones. I've spent tons of time trying to track some down. Some weak leads on thesamba.com but otherwise I've checked all of my usual sources, and then some, and it seems like nobody has them.
I have the ones that came off the engine before the rebuild, but of course with the new flywheel and machined case that's not going to be very helpful. Plus, I don't even know their thickness as the markings have long since worn off.

I would check with Clyde. If he doesn't have them they aren't worth having _________________ 1969 Beetle

Wow, these are crazy-hard to find. Nobody had a variety. I found some .36mm's at Wolfsburg West, and some .32's at vintagepartsinc.com. The classifieds on thesamba.com didn't pan out. But between that and the ones I could re-use from the old engine, I should be set. But it took some work to find even this meager haul.
This being my first-time build, I'm thinking life would have been easier if I'd just gone with a dual-port 1600. But then, if I were looking for easy, I wouldn't be doing any of this in the first place, eh? _________________ 1965 Beetle |

Yep -- gotta keep an eye on the prize! In the meantime, wondering what I used to do with all the time I now spend asking, listening, reading, learning, waiting, and (every now and then) actually working on the car.
Hoping to get this step done tomorrow. Stay tuned . . . _________________ 1965 Beetle |

With a variety of shims and a borrowed Torquemeister (as usual, thanks Clyde!) this was actually one of the easiest tasks there is. Took three times to get the end play correct, but this was expected and no big deal with the proper tools. Onward . . . _________________ 1965 Beetle |
