Hi, new to the club and Forum.
I am totally restoring my 1973 Type 181. See the pics at www.allaroundrestos.com.
I have just turned my attention to the wheels, which are the special 14" non-vented ones, different from vans, etc.
I have a good powdercoater lined up, but before I do that, I feel that I need to have the wheels straightened/trued, especilly since the other Thing I used to have experienced vibration/balance problems because of out-of-round wheels.
Does anyone know of reputable place that will straighten/true these old wide-5 type wheels? I know of one place in Chamblee, but they think a lot (I mean A LOT!) of their services, making me think twice about doing this.
Many thanks! |

Most machine shops will do it, but it will be pricey. About $45-$60 per hour. They'll need a brake drum to use as a fixtue in a lathe. You'd be doing good to get it done for less than $150.00
I remember a magazine article that spotlighted a shop in Ca. that did it, but it wouldn't help matters to pay shipping on 4 or 5 wheels that far away.
If there's a used tire store near you (they're usually pretty slow on business) they could put your wheels on a spin balancer while you eyeball them to check for truness (at a slow speed if available). A cheap way to inspect them, but they won't staighten them for you.
We met at Joey's show, loved your 356 oil filter stein!
Good luck! _________________ '69 Bug, 1776, dual kadrons, Web 111 cam
