What is the take on running synthetic oil in a high preformance motor verses conventional oil ? Is there a great benefit gain ? Thanks Gary |

Gary, You can read about this subject for hours on the Samba and still not be sure what to use. The last thing I read from Jake said he uses Brad Penn synthetic for break-in and continual use. http://www.bradpennracing.com/Products/BIO30.html
I'm sure if that has changed Jake will let us know. _________________ 73 Typ481

For the average person there isn't much difference, but if you're running gages and really pay attention to every little thing, you might notice something. I switched to Royal Purple 20W50 a while back, hoping for lower oil temps, but it made no difference for my engine. I've also been told to get taller tires to slow down the rpms (slow down the engine on the highway-to lower oil temps).
You won't know any difference unless you try conventional oil, record your temps and pressures, then switch to synthetic and record stuff again. I think Pep Boys has 20w50 now. I got mine on ebay. _________________ '69 Bug, 1776, dual kadrons, Web 111 cam

Unless there is a significant difference, it would be difficult to measure outside a lab. i.e. Different outside temperatures, different driving situations, (more or less traffic, different terrain, more or less aggressive), etc. Even Jake's lab test could be called into question by the purist unless the motor was flushed clean between changes because of possible cross contamination of the various lubes. Did you you floss between oils Jake??? _________________ Ya can't have too many VDUBS.

All the years that I have drove air-cooled vw's, I have never had an oil problem. I have had a problem with the nut behind the wheel, but never an oil problem. The two engines I have lost were not because of the oil, but because I did not keep enuff in it. |

Yes, we flushed the engine between the oils as well as possible. Cross contamination isn't of much concern since 6 quarts is hard to contaminate with a couple of left over ounces of a previous oil.. And the lab can point these out during the analysis.
In times past we have seen HUGE differences from one oil to the next, look at the graphs on my forum to see what we foiund with this engine..
I use no pure mineral oils...
Not many people are crazy enough to trust an oil without changing it for 23,000 miles but I did and that engine is still alive after 6 years and 138,000 miles of HARD Jake driving. _________________ Jake Raby
