Today I confirmed what Rick and David had told me..... Hopewell Tire & Automotive here in Athens can and will gladly mount and balance tires on wide five wheels.
For those who don't know, wide five wheels are the early VW wheels with the BIG hole in the middle.
The guys there are very nice and thier prices are reasonable. They can also do alignments, even on lowered cars.
The only negative is that they are only open Mon - Fri. They close at 5:30pm.

Bob, I had Porterfield balance the wheels for my Thing and my 60 Bug and then I tried to get another set balanced and they told me they could not balance wide fives. I told them I'd had two sets done before and they basically told me I was mistaken, that they never had done those type wheels.
How recently did you have yours done? _________________ 73 Typ481

Thanks Bob. That's good to know that they are indeed able to balance. They are good folks to deal with.
Anybody else know a shop that will balance wide fives? _________________ 73 Typ481

Is this a bubble balance or high speed balance? I am guessing bubble. |

No. High speed computer balance. Their adaptor fills in the wide five to be accepted on the balancer spindle. _________________ Ya can't have too many VDUBS.

Personally, I would like to find a Hunter "Tune-in" balancer that balances the wheel on the car. Snow Tire in Athens use to have one, but the sales manager says its not around any more. Said that without hesitation. Yeah Right! I see parts of them on ebay once in a while, but always off in some distant location. Very expensive to ship. _________________ Ya can't have too many VDUBS.

Hopewell is also high speed balancing. They asked me where I wanted the weights, front or backside of the wheel. They also told me which tire had been most out of balance and suggested I use that one as a spare.
I too, would like to find someone who will balance on the car. _________________ 73 Typ481

Spare? What's that? Seriously though one of these days I plan on getting another wheel. Lots of other stuff to buy first.
Nice to know that high speed balancing is available. I know that the last time tires were put on mine that bubble was all that we could find.
What size tires do you guys run? I know the "stock" size is a 185/75 or thereabouts. I believe what is on it now is 205/75 up front with 225/70 in the back. |

Right now I have 185R14s on my Thing. I'm going to go to a 27x8.5R14 all terrain treads. They will still fit stock rims with little or no rubbing. _________________ 73 Typ481
