out of curiosity, i have seen a number of ads for bugs that need new brake lines. is it that difficult that people just give up? how hard is it?

IMO, it's not that difficult. Biggest problem is getting the carpet (if there is any) out of the way to run the line from the front to the back. Other than that, it's just a matter of bending the tubing just right without kinks.

There's like 6 or 7 hard lines and 4 rubber lines. You can get German or Brazillian rubber lines. The hard lines are available individually at Pep Boys, Take your old one to match up the shape on the end, and the length.

The hard lines leak eventually.
The rubber ones plug up with age. (Like most of us) Embarassed

Usually the one that goes is the long line that runs from the master cylinder to the tee in the back. They tend to wear a hole near the pedal cluster. It is not that difficult to replace, like Clyde said, get the straight line from auto parts store and using the old one as a pattern, just bend to fit. Just make sure to get the right threads on the end fittings.
