|
|
I am having problems downshifting into 2nd while the bus is in motion. Going through the gears from a complete stop is not a problem (shifts like butter), but when I am cruising @ 10-15 mph and try to put it into 2nd, I have to force it in and most of the times it will just slip into 4th. There is no grinding sound and I have no problems getting it into reverse. I found some useful information searching the Samba that I will investigate tonight, but I was wondering if I am missing something. Here are some of the topics I will be looking at:
1) Check tranny oil
2) bushings inside the nose cone
3) adjust shifter plate and replace shifter bushings
4) check shift linkage
5) change couplings @ the end of the shift rod and front shift rod bushing

I am really new at this, so most of what I have listed above might as well be chinese, but I have the Idiot book and a Bentley. So I will be reading up on those topics tonight. Are there any other possibilities that I missed? Any and all help is always appreciated. Thanks.

You need a cheater pipe on your shifter
Just kidding.
What you have posted sounds good to me. There is a possibility that your synchroniser is going bad, which is basically untouchable by normal people like us (lets just hope that aint it). Do all the stuff you mentioned and if it still won't downshift, use your brakes instead while you slowly fill a jar with spare money for the trans guy.
good luck. _________________ '69 Bug, 1776, dual kadrons, Web 111 cam

Correct me if I'm wrong Clyde but wouldn't it grind if it was a synchro? This sounds more like a linkage issue. If its just missing 2nd and hitting 4th. My shifter plate got alittle out and it woul;d grind reverse sometime when shifting to 2nd. I was told to loosin shifter bolts, and put in rev. and tighten but that didnt get it . I had to test and tweek to get it just right . good luck _________________ Shane Price

I'm no trans expert- that was just an educated guess. Doesn't the synchroniser help when downshifting? I thought that was when they work the hardest ('cause the gears are at more diverse rpms) _________________ '69 Bug, 1776, dual kadrons, Web 111 cam

Me neither dude. Though I've built my share of manual honda tranny's and done alittle valvebody and electronics on auto's. Synchro's just match up the speeds of the shafts so the gears mesh vnice and smooth with no grinding. Bad sychro's will just cause some grinding when shifting to that gear. I wouldn't think it would cause it to miss that gear completely. It could still be internal, maybe a fork or something. Forgive me if Im tellin you stuff you already know Clyde. Not tryin to sound like a" know it all"! Only trying to help _________________ Shane Price

Hey Teddy, I had the same problem on Big Bird and it was the shifter plate. Seems be a running theme around here. One word of advise: make a complete run through the gears before you button everything up and clean your hands. I corrected second and jacked up third. Some fine tweeking and all was well.
If you can't get it, we can take a look at it next time we get together to do some DUB work. _________________ 71 Standard Beetle "Big Bird"

Not sure if this fixed it or just masked a bigger problem, but it worked. I just removed the carpet in the front of the bus, loosened the two 13mm nuts at the base of the shifter, and banged it a bit towards the drivers side with a hammer. There was some additional tweaking involved, but she's downshifting without a problem now. Thanks for everyone's input! _________________ Ted Mierzwa

You don't have to own it to use it. But actually he does have a splitty in his backyard. _________________ 73 Typ481
