well, it figures. i get the chunk of metal out of the engine and today it begins to tock. crap. it happened while i was waiting for the bug to warm up at work. i barely noticed the noise as i was pulling away. but i noticed it. i got out and listened, panicked and shut the engine off. locked her up and caught a ride home. maybe im being paranoid. i dunno. im gonna rent a truck tomorrow, and grab a tow bar from Doster Bro (unless one of you kind souls can help me bring the bug home) so i can tear into the valves and rockers again and see whats up.

muir is not making me feel any better.

okay, ive read and reread muir's overhaul section and it says that a thrown rod makes a tocking noise after you release the accelerator pedal. well, the 73 tocks all the time (could a ring have broken?). everytime the valves move. maybe i should try readjusting the valves (again) to see if that helps. ive done this 4 times this weekend to make sure i had it down. i gauged them to .006 each time (i bought new feeler gauges just to be safe as well) and now this. but one more time will definitely not hurt it.

the frustration builds. just when i feel like im making headway convincing lauren NOT to give up on the bug..... but *shrug* this stuff happens. gotta learn somehow.

I have never heard an engine "tock"... Is that a knock??

Now you see what a timing adjustment can do.. Oh well, its an open opportunity to get first hand internal experience!

Consider yourself lucky. You have help.

I built my first engine at age 8 in a barn with hogs 10 feet away on a dirt floor.. The only help I had was a drunk guy that siowed me how to adjust valves.

This will be fun as long as you take it for the challenge it is.

it isnt a knock. imagine the noise the valves make when they need adjusting, that ticking, and then imagine it a little deeper, it becomes a tocking. thats what ive got.

Sounds like you may have a carbon knock due to too much carbon on the pistons, or you may have a worn piston skirt.

Record it and post it...

well its all good now, i got to work and took off the valve cover to discover that a rod was laying on the pushrod tube. it had fallen out of the cradle in the rocker. i tightened everything up and adjusted the valves one more time and taaa daaa, no more noise (except a noisy muffler that lauren hasnt bought yet). absolutely no more noise. thanks for the suggestions jake! this gives me more insight into what i need to pay attention to.

I didn't realize this club came with phone support. You really do get a lot for 12 bucks.

Hey Tito, do you mind sharing that number?
