I'm assuming the cold weather is causing the speedo in the 67 bug I take care of to make a loud screaming noise. I've lubed the cable with graphite. That didn't help. The car stays in a heated garage when I have it, but still is making its noise once it is out and driving. It sometimes quits for a time and then starts again. When it is at its loudest the needle jumps around.

I need to fix it before I take it back to its owner.

My experience with the watercooled speedos (can't imagine they are that different) is that the problem is not with the cable but is with the speedo itself. The one that I rebuilt for the Jetta did exactly as you described and still did it after numerous disassemblies and copious quantities of lube. I eventually replaced it and never quite figured out what caused the screaming.

Take the car back to its owner on a warm day.

Mine did the exact same thing about a year ago. I pulled the cable off the back of the speedo head and squirted pb blast in it and let it run down in it. It takes a min. cause you can only spray alittle at a time. I haven't had a sound sense. I have probably gone 20,000+ miles sense then. White lithium spray works great to. I feel like it is most likely in the cable. I would do that and if it still carries on put a cable in it. anim_25

It is that same 67. I wish it were mine. It isn't (wasn't) the cable. The speedo killed itself on the way home. I had just about decided it was a gearing problem when the needle went nuts. It hit the stop and broke in half. It spun like a propeller the rest of the way home.

Anybody got and extra speedo for a 67? Embarassed

Damn thats crazy Laughing I can check with shorty tomorrow. He may have one. Do you know how many years will work in a 67? I know it would have to be 67 and earlier. But arent they're diff. top speeds on certain years? I just sold Joe my 62 parts bug. It had a speedo in it. Oh well.

I think they are the same from the time they changed from clear needles to the time when they put in the gas gauge. I may actually have one. I'll need to dig thru my boxes of parts.

Tanbug-if you read this...how much do you charge to rebuild a speedo?

Graphite is your friend... Use it liberally on the speedo cable as well as inside the speedo drive.

I used graphite on the cable and intended to do the same with the speedo....it just self-destructed before I could get home to do it. Crying or Very sad

Hey Jon the graphite thing could still work. Just take a no. 2 pencil and stab it through the glass. Head Bang That should stop the needle from spinning like a propeller . Then you just get Van halen 1984. Tap your foot to panama, and just speed up until the broken white lines go by at the same tempo. Thats 60 mph Head Bang anim_25
