Well, really, I know where it is! It's just that it misses sometimes. Starts fine and runs well until it warms up, then might miss a beat or two, say, accellerating from 3rd to 4th, or just cruising around 55-60mph. Happens maybe once or twice in a five minute period, but is noticeable and nerve-wracking. I think it's more prevalent under a load, but power seems okay.

I've checked the valve clearance (cold) about umpteen times, and it's good at .006. New plugs, points, rotor, and condensor. Timing good -- does it no matter where it's set. What next -- coil? Fuel pump? Maybe a valve is sticking? Carb issue? Probably all this stuff needs replacing anyway, but I'd like to start with the obvious (well, obvious to someone brighter than me, at any rate).

Thanks!

Sounds like a plug wire breaking down. A bad wire will normaly show up under a load. Also check connections on your coil. You can wiggle them and see if they feel loose. Pull them off and see if connectors has black places from arcing or getting hot. You can crimp them alittle tighter with pliers or if they're realy bad just snip em of and crimp on some new ones.

Bring it to the meeting on Sunday and I'll look at it. It does sound like ignition.

I'd say carb. I had a similar issue on the beetle and it was due to a load of junk in the bowl.

Thanks for all the advice. It's down getting new floor pans welded in so I won't have it for the meeting. But I'll check the ignition connections (the wires are new, though); then I'll move on to the carb.

She had been off the road for the better part of three months, for various reasons. The other day I finally put everything back together and took it for a spin. The problem appears to be fixed -- ran like a dream!

I wish I could say who was right, but I can't for sure. I rebuilt the carb (w/ Clyde doing the rebush) so it could have been that. But I also replaced the coil right before that and hardly drove it before carb job.

Anyhow, thanks for the input!

I have a 1970 Beetle with a problem that sounds very close to yours.
Mine cranks fine and runs fine for the first 10-15 mins at the 55-60 mph range it feels like you let off the gas and sputters down to 3 gear and down to 2nd gear and down to 1st and stops .
i can restart it asap and idles fine but it needs to cool for 5 mins then i can go on down the road for maby a mile and the same thing happens.
But from cold it runs 10-15 min befor this problem.
I have new fuel filter, new coil, going to change the plug wires today
and start elemanating things one by one.
Thanks for any help ! or Sugestions !
Thanks!

Next time it starts to die, squirt some water on the fuel pump and see if that fixes it, when old pumps get hot they dont work as well.

Sounds like it is a fuel delivery problem. Check the fuel filter(s) and the strainer in the tank. When you drive it may be pulling debris from the tank to the strainer and restricting gas flow. Once it sits a bit, the debris will fall away letting gas flow again.

If it is the pump, a new one would fix the problem, but pumps usually just quit. You can test the pump and fuel flow by pulling the line off the carb and aiming it away from the engine, have someone turn the key. If fuel shoots out in a steady manner, you can probably rule out a delivery problem.

Well it looks like it's going to be the fuel pump !
It finally quit pumping no gas to the fuel filter ,so there is no stream of gas coming.
I will be putting it on this evening.
Thanks for all the quick responces from all !
