I have a 28 PICT that needs attention. It leaks and the throttle shaft is shot. I'm currently running a 1200 with a 009 dizzy and am content with that for now (though may upgrade later).
Overwhelming amount of information/misinformation online. I wanted to get some thoughts/opinions.
I would prefer to keep it stock, for now. So I could (a) get somebody to rebush my the shaft, though I'm interested in attempting my first rebuild on the rest of it, or (b) buy a refurbished Solex online, about $225.
Alternatively, there are EMPIS, Brosols, etc out there that may (or may not?) work with my 1200/009 combo. I'm thinking a 30 PICT-1, for example, would work, while a 34 series would not. Since I would save a bit of cash going with a new aftermarket carb, I would consider this too. But I've read some complaints about the quality of them.
On another thread there was a link for a somewhat local guy who can rebuilt/rebush but the link was a dead end.
Also, when I pulled the old fuel line (which I was replacing) out of the carb, the little inlet connector (brassy-looking cyclinder) came out in the hose. Do these just pop back in place? Didn't look kosher to me. _________________ 1965 Beetle |

The easiest fix would be to call Clyde. He has a new 30/31 carb in his store. I've heard mixed reviews about the localish guy who rebushes the carbs. I have used a guy in Wisconson who rebuilds and rebushes. His work is top notch, bolt on and go, when he is done. However, he no longer has an ad on the Samba and I'm not sure where I put his contact info.
To fix the brass tube that pulled out, I usually knurl the end a little, push it back in, and JB weld it. _________________ 73 Typ481

the guy in Wisconsin does great work. The carb on my vert
is from him. He only rebuilds German Solex carbs.
Also, be sure that brass tube is in there securely! JB Weld or
whatever it takes. I've seen more than one engine fire due to that
tube popping out. _________________ 63 Beetle |

Thanks for the input . . . I may do both -- buy a new carb, and refurb/rebuild the old, just for the fun of it. Now all I need is a big red phone with a hotline to Clyde! _________________ 1965 Beetle |
