Jon, I don't know if this will apply, but I was having trouble with the '73 Thing running great when first started and then wanting to die after a few minutes and then difficult to keep running at all after it warmed up. Long story short, The coil was dying and as it heated up from an internal short, it put out less voltage. Replaced the coil and now it runs fine.

Bob, that goes along with my thought that maybe since I'm running only on battery, there is less power to the ignition. I'll know tomorrow, I'm getting a new alternator on it tonight. If that doesn't fix it, I'll try changing the coil.

I was wondering if the change occurs after the choke opens. Question

Yep.. The easiest way to trouble shoot this is the points will turn green.. (If you have them)

Thats due to low voltage being present.

Hey there!! Not cool to pick on little ol' Mark. Didn't you see that Jon had already gone through the brakes? They were only pulling hard to one side when Jon got it.

Update: I've been driving the car on a regular basis and it is doing pretty good. Still having some brake problems on and off. (the curse of Mark Twisted Evil ) I'm goin to put on a new master cylinder, right front wheel cylinder, (left already replaced) and new flexible lines in the front. Also have new, used shocks to put on.

I need to install a new bushing in the steering column and fix the self cancel on the turn signal switch.

Door panels are on and sound damper going in next, then carpet, and speaker box I built for the luggage area. After the inside I will attempt a little body work on the rusty areas. Once that is done it will be ready to give away. She will be surprised. Cool

Thanks to Steve and Shane for all their help.
