Last year we had a blast at our shop working on VWs and playing on the dyno.. This year we'll do it all over again on the 27th and 28th of March, so make plans to attend! Clyde and I discussed this tonight so he already added it to the club schedule.

By the time this rolls around I'll have more updates done to the shop and the property including paving of the main parking lot and back driveway. I hope to make some updates to the old shop building before then too.

see ya'll then :-)

Sweet! I'll make sure you have some fresh rodents around to give CPR to... The population seems to be down this year for some reason... They seem to be dying from body piercings lately.

Gonna be sweet!
Mark needs a dual circuit reservoir.

So does anyone else with a pre 67 VW who hasn't stepped up.

Anyone up for discs?

Yep. with the dual circuit parts easy to source and dirt cheap there is NO REASON to pretend you are in 1966 and not make the swap..

Hell, I learned that single circuit brakes were inadequate before I even had a drivers license...

4 wheel disc for me on every car I own... The only exception is the Pinzgauer because discs are not available, even it had a dual circuit master from the factory, from a VW Bus!!!

How do disc brakes compare to drums? I've always heard that discs would lock up easier than drum brakes. I know discs stop better but I was concerned with rain slick roads coupled with the light front end of the beetles.

I did a bit of research on this a while back and found many, many mixed opinions. The best I got out of it was; always convert a single to a dual circuit, stopping power of drum against disc at certain speeds can be measured in hundreds of feet not just feet. Drum pads contact 35-60 percent on a new install or poorly adjusted and 60-80 percent on a broken in shoe. The contact surface of disc pads exceed 80 at all times of the life and need no adjustment. Some argue that with the absence of anti lock on discs that they are prone to lock up. This is true but not as extreme as most would think. If you were to remove the anti lock portion of one of our newer vehicle and stab the brakes you could slide from here to Atlanta because of the brake assistance on new cars. Disc brakes on a vintage VW will slide but not to the extreme as a new car. With that said, some say that a split system is the way to go. Dual circuit master, disc front and drum rear.

Again, I am no expert on brakes, this is merely a collection of opinions stated by the pros.

Drums are effective in a beetle application as long as you don't work the brakes like I do.. Drum brakes build more heat and transfer that into the fluid and then you experience brake fade which leads to no brakes..

The sensitivity of the brakes can be adjusted by the size of the master cylinder used as that is what dictates brake modulation to all 4 corners. You can then further enhance the percentage of front/ rear brake bias with the use of a proportioning valve for instances where the driver wants adjustability of front and rear brake bias.

If you have a problem with the front wheels locking up under braking throw away the stock "rubber band" tires and install something with a real foot print. This will give a larger contact patch for the tire onto the road and that will increase tire adhesion/ grip...

Drum brakes were great when they were new and the speed limit was 50 MPH for a new bug. Today's drums aren't round and are made in some 3rd world country by a bunch of bastards that make 5 cents an hour. They are imported by people that don't give a damn about your VW, your life of the life of your family. They want your money.

Not many people know today that when a drum brake job is done and the drums are machined that the replacement brake shoe MUST BE RE-ARCed to fit the new larger diameter of the drum! If this isn't done the amount of friction material that contacts the drum is greatly reduced. This causes heat and wear to accelerate and causes constant brake adjustments to compensate for the wear.

I think the no adjustment part was what drew me to the thought of going the disc route when I started getting mine back on the road. What would be the downside of going disc front and rear?

The only negative is cost.. Find a modern car with drum brakes.. Even a Smart car has discs!
