I see your point about body work. It would be quite alarming to discover body work flaws only after spraying it with high-dollar paint! As for color choices, some guys on the Samba had varying degrees of luck with a Sherwin-Williams acrylic enamel that was custom mixed. A little more expensive than Rustoleum, but still way cheaper than good quality auto paint.
Still not sure what I'll do with my car (I'll have plenty of time to consider) but thanks again for the info. _________________ 1965 Beetle |

Well, time has been short lately so not much has happened. I did pull the motor out last weekend and found that I had one piston in wrong (arrow towards front) and a rod that had a wrist pin bushing that was out of spec.... This had to be the knock. Will be ordering all new pistons, rods, and jugs soon.
This weekend we did fix the back shelf over the transaxle. Sense this is not a full restoration and I want my son to learn how to work on a car I made it a little easier for him. We cut out the rusted back shelf and welded in a full box cage to strengthen the body back up. We then cut a 1/8" aluminum plate to fit over the area. The plate is sealed on the bottom and uses 6 flush bolts to secure it to the cage. We can now just remove this cover when we want to get to the motor mounting bolts, starter, hlf shafts, and clutch linkage. We added sound deadening material and will add carpet soon.

Thanks guys... It works for my son and I...
Just could not see spending over $300 for the shelf and then have to cut it all out to weld it back in.
To start of he will not have a back seat... 16 years old and I want as few people in the car as possible. |
